What can we learn from the film, Soul?

Pixar’s latest film, ‘Soul’ is currently making the rounds as one of the best films of 2020, and I thought why not give it a watch.

This is what the official synopsis reads, ‘Joe is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn’t quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz — and he’s good. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul.’

The film, as soon as it starts, you join the journey of the lead character, you feel his emotions, what he’s going through, wondering what is going to happen next.

It’s quite a gripping story, you relate to the storyline, you relate with what’s happening, the takeaways from it, the lessons you can learn. In all, it’s such a beautiful watch, and easily one of the best films of 2020, for me. You end up cheering for the character, you end up being emotional, and you also secretly reflect on your own life while watching it.
(if you haven’t watched the film yet, please don’t read beyond this, because I’ll be directly reflecting upon its storyline and that would mean, spoilers)

The lesson that it portrays, is quite magnificent, one we don’t often ponder upon. We hear so much about passion, knowing what it is, and wanting to live that life.

It’s all about being passionate about something, making it your core thing about life, and your life centered around it. So much so, that everything else about Life is something we take for granted, and often feel its the same old mundane stuff.

And here is where the film beautifully portrays a contrary point to this approach, it’s not only about your passion and what you do. Life is not just about that.

That is just a portion of your life, and there’s so much more than what we truly see and enjoy. Life is about enjoying every bit of it, enjoying every thing that we see, everything around us, everyone around us. Its about the big moments and the small moments.

Life is about enjoying the sunrise and the walk, about conversing with people and listening to the birds chirp, about living life to exploring every bit of it. Everything that we take for granted, is something that we could live and enjoy, but we often overlook it, because we are chasing just one thing, forgetting about the rest.

That is precisely the reason why this film, Soul is pure love and joy to watch. Its brilliant, it’s a must see, and that journey is something, I’m hoping we can learn something from.
